The Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa

His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa

Ogyen Trinley Dorje

His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje is the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism, to which I belong. In the Spring and Summer of 2017 His Holiness made His premiere Canadian visit, stopping in cities throughout the country including Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver, which were His main stops.

His Holiness bestowed many teachings and empowerments during His visit as well as visiting many Dharma centres, monasteries and temples.

“The goal of The Buddhist Monastic Initiative is to create a non-sectarian forum for envisioning the future of monastic life in the West. We plan to achieve this goal by conducting research, developing this website so it can serve as a resource on the subject, and organizing conferences and retreats where these ideas can be explored in person.

The spirit of this initiative is to create an uplifted and inspiring vision for Buddhist monastic life in the West in the 21st century, based on a deep understanding of Buddhist tradition and Western culture.
